Japanese Grilled Rice Ball - Iccho Restaurant

$2.50 + Tax

One thing I love about  this restaurant is that it opens till after midnight.  I just came back from work and I dropped by for dinner.  It was after midnight and I don't know where I would go eat if not for this restaurant. One would assume that a college degree guarantees a nice office job with nice 9-5 stable hours.  I got my office job all right but since I don't work for the government that meticulously observes the 8-hours workday and I'm defined by the labor department as salaried professionals who do not qualify for overtime pay; my employer isn't shy to put people like me to work the extra hours. For my type of job, driving home after midnight from an office isn't abnormal.  My colleagues and I consider work days with an off-duty hour around midnight to be some of our better days since it can be worse as we are approaching the deadline of our projects.

Anyway, I ordered my usual grilled rice ball, which is a very popular late night snack in Japan.  There is an option with cheese filling and other filling choices. But I ordered the plain one without filling this time.  Long time ago, I had tried the ones with cheese inside and they were even better.  I'm just happy I can have it here in the USA  after midnight.  I love the crispy crust with that chewy texture and that great char-grill flavor.  Drizzle a little soy sauce, or dip the rice ball in the sauce of one of those stir fry dishes, and it's my late night comfort food.
