Plain Cupcake - La Esperanza Bakery

Image
$1.25 The plain cup cake from this central American bakery is big and dense.  Unlike the typical cakes sold at the average American grocery store, this cake was not that sweet.  It tasted decent and it could be a good breakfast cake because it tasted more like the less sweet muffins.  Again, there wasn't much flavor of butter in this cake and therefore I'm not too crazy about it.  I will buy this again when I'm back to this bakery in the future. But since there are better Asian bakeries just a few blocks away, I don't think it's likely for me to go out of my way to get baked goods here soon, unless my beloved Asian bakeries are closed while this bakery is the only bakery that opens.

Chocolate Chips Cookie - La Esperanza Bakery

Image
$1.25 This chocolate chips cookie is big, and full of mini-chocolate chips.  Unfortunately,  it's not the typical buttery chocolate chips cookies that I am familiar with.  It definitely  isn't the American style chocolate chips cookies, but rather a Central American rendition. It's because the bakery where I bought this cookie is Central American.  I always drove by this strip mall that resembles the typical store fronts in inner Tijuana Mexico, but only today did I drive in to try out the bakery there. The cookie was too bland and floury for my personal taste.  I tasted not much else other than the chocolate chips.  It was a crisp cookie on the harder side, but not too hard.  It seemed it was made from a shortening based dough with a lot less sugar used than the typical American style chocolate chips cookies. This cookie was freshly baked daily though and it smelled pleasantly fresh and not stale like the ones in so many grocery sto...

Iced Coffee With Coffee Jelly - Hamadaya

Image
$3.55 + Tax I would like to avoid coffee after work, but I couldn't help it when I was shopping for dinner to go. I felt so tired and thirsty after my commute from work.  I just felt like having some coffee to recharge me even though drinking coffee in the evening is not really a healthy lifestyle. So I ordered the coffee jelly over milk with a shot of espresso at this bakery cafe before I began my dinner shopping.  I was just curious when I saw this on the menu.  May be a lot of people like to have jelly in their coffee, I personally don't care for coffee with boba or jelly.  I prefer not to have anything that isn't liquid in my coffee but I'm neutral about it.   The jelly in this coffee tasted like black coffee and I guess it was made with black coffee.    In terms of taste, this isn't my most favorite coffee drink.  It tasted okay to me. I don't hate it, but I'm not in love with it.  It did wake me up though and as I am typing...

Portuguese Style Egg Tart - 85 °C Bakery Cafe

Image
$1.65+Tax The Portuguese style egg tart was one of my favorite afternoon tea snacks when I was a kid, it's still one of my favorites now that I'm an adult. Growing up, I had this kind of egg tart at least twice a week.  Wherever in the world I am, I always look for this kind of egg tart.  I can eat a few in one setting, with a nice cup of coffee. This is a buttery egg tart and the egg custard is very rich in cream, which is the reason I like it.  I think this is one of the best selling items at this bakery. Sometimes they were just sold out when I was trying to get some.  So I grab a dozen of them whenever I see them.  They are made fresh everyday and they always smell so good, warm or cold. They taste heavenly when they are fresh  and warm at the bakery. But they keep quite well in the fridge for 2-3 days, and they taste as good as fresh after being warmed up in a toaster oven.  This is why I always buy a dozen when I see them.  I've t...
