Hot Hong Kong Style Coffee - South by Square Eight

Image
MOP 40, approx US$4.97 While coffee seems to be pretty much a universal beverage, but every country has its own way of making coffee its own.  Apparently, Hong Kong has its own rendition of coffee.  I'm curious about all cultures, including the coffee culture, so when I saw there was a Hong Kong style coffee on the menu of this restaurant , I just had to try it out.  I have to say that I much prefer the coffee that I usually ordered back in Los Angeles .  This Hong Kong style coffee was a little too bland for me...

Hong Kong Style Milk Tea 熱港式奶茶 - South by Square Eight

MOP 40, approx US$4.97 Like Hong Kong, Macau has a very strong milk-tea drinking culture. I have no idea why milk-tea is so popular in Macau. People here always order it in breakfast and afternoon tea and snack times. May be Macau’s proximity to Hong Kong just makes everything that is popular in Hong Kong also popularity in Macau. The popularity of drinking milk-tea here is like drinking coffee back in the USA. I think milk-tea drinking has been catching on in the USA also, thanks to Starbucks for making Chia tea mainstream, the Thai restaurants for popularizing the Thai Ice Tea, and the Taiwanese restaurants and bakeries for bringing the Boba Milk Tea to the USA. But I personally like the Hong Kong style milk tea the most. It is more flavorful than the Taiwanese Boba milk tea, and it doesn’t taste like perfumy like the Chai. The Hong Kong milk tea has this good rich tea aroma and flavor but it doesn’t have the tartness and bitter undertone of the English tea. I personally...

Latte With Caramel (L) - Pinwheel Cafe & Bakery

Image
$5.25 + Tax I discovered this cafe when I went to one of my most favorite Chinese (Cantonese) restaurants in the same strip mall, which wasn't open yet at the time.  As I began to explore my meal options in the same strip mall, I realized that the restaurant called Lemonade was replaced by another bakery, called Pinwheel Cafe & Bakery.  After I stepped in out of curiosity, the really nice French background music immediately captured my attention.  There was also a great aroma in there, (at that moment, I'm not sure there is always this baked goods' aroma throughout the day), that made the display of the baked goods kept in the whisker baskets so much more appetizing.  Immediately, I forgot about getting the Chinese food and started ordering at this cafe. As Starbucks' regular customer, I think the above coffee was similar to the quality and taste that I'm used to at Starbucks.  In another word, it was no better and no worse in terms of taste....

Rosé Wine Cocktail - Baleen Kitchen

$14.00 + Tax + 15% Tips What's New Year without a New Year cocktail?  I don't know what the name of this cocktail is.  It's not on the menu at this restaurant .  I told the bartender I would like to try a cocktail that was based on Rosé Wine, he then mixed this drink for me.  Years ago, I had tried a glass of Rosé and I remember how I was somewhat okay with it.  What do I know, I'm not much a wine drinker, a beer drinker or a cocktail drinker.  I'm  only an occasional social drinker who only has a drink on special occasions, like New Year... I'm not exactly sure what this drink had other than Rosé wine and some blue berries and raspberries.  It was quite tart and  it carried a little  bitterness typical of vodka or white rum... I think this drink tasted minty, like a mojito.  This drink tasted no better or worse than any cocktails that I had tried in my life thus far.  I  personally like a glass of strawberry l...

Cafe Latte - Truxton's American Bistro

Image
$3.38 + Tax The cafe latte at this restaurant was too bitter for me even after I added a few bags of crane sugar, and one bag of Splenda. It looked like a great cup of coffee drink, just I'm not into bitter coffee.  Is good coffee supposed to be bitter?

Milk Tea - Din Tai Fung

Image
$4.00 + Tax I don't mind the price of this milk tea if only it was good.  This milk tea at this restaurant tasted so bland.  I couldn't taste much tea, or milk.  I think I can make much better milk tea myself at home with a Lipton tea bag and the evaporated milk from the can. This is one of those items that my father always banned us from ordering when he took us to eat out when we were kids.  His rationale was, "Never order anything in a restaurant that we can easily make it better at home."
